It's Hot, So Here's What You Can Do About It

By , About.com GuideJuly 28, 2012

Follow me on:

It's hot. You're stuck at home -- a quick trip to, say, New Zealand, where it's the middle of winter, is not an option. Guess what? Some of us don't even have air conditioners. I have never lived in a house or apartment with full air conditioning.

After you retrieve your jaw from the floor and cease weeping for me, I'm going to share some secrets:

  1. I'm not the only one without AC.
  2. You can survive without it, unless you live in the desert. In that case, turn it on, but continue to read.

Some remedies for beating the heat are old-fashioned. Do you know what the first swimsuit looked like? Nothing! I'll let you get out of that what you can or care to. Ice is a chillingly fabulous thing too. Share it with your pets. This fall, paint your roof white or a light color. It's kind of like wearing a natty pair of white linen shorts and a crisp cotton pastel blouse -- it doesn't absorb the sun's rays. Wearing black is always cool, but only figuratively speaking. And these are just a few suggestions for cooling down. I've got plenty more.

I leave you with the wise words of Stephen Wright, whom I actually ate dinner with once (in a group), "If you saw a heat wave, would you wave back?"
