I was shopping at my local Trader Joe's a few nights ago when one of the high-spirited Hawaiian-shirted employees pulled the tops off of a couple boxes of miniature pumpkins: oranges and whites. I picked up one of the creamy white pumpkins and wondered if I should kick off my collection for the fall right then and there -- even though my house is severely neglected and nobody would notice a lone white pumpkin among the shoes, empty pots and "I Cut Trees" flyers crowding my front entry.

Yes, I know what I need to do before decorating for Halloween: clean. Big-time.
But that won't stop you from acquiring pumpkins for your Halloween displays and autumn porch decor. Before you go pumpkin shopping, do you know their names and varieties; the who's who and what's what of the pumpkin world? Check out my Guide to Pumpkins. If nothing else, it might impress someone when you point out the difference between Cinderella and Fairytale pumpkins or the next time you're a contestant on Jeopardy!
