Today is National Poinsettia Day -- a good reason to go out and buy a couple more to decorate your porch or entryway. Maybe in a color other than red, so they don't look so blatantly Christmasey come December 26th.
Northern San Diego County -- specifically Encinitas, California -- is the hothouse of poinsettia country and home to the world-famous Ecke Ranch. The town is a couple of miles from the ocean, and is home to several flower-growing ranches and greenhouses. Something about it is a nectar spot for producing fabulous flowers.

By an Act of Congress, December 12th was set aside as National Poinsettia Day. The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who is credited with introducing the native Mexican plant to the United States. The purpose of the day is to enjoy the beauty of this popular holiday plant.
