Cactus plants are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. And succulents do not belong to one plant family. Instead, they are represented in more than 30 different plant species. Succulents can be found in different plant families, including lily, amaryllis, crassula, daisy, milkweed and even geraniums.

While deserts throughout the world contain many succulents, not all succulents are desert plants.

Where in the World Are Succulents?

Contrary to popular belief, succulents and succulent gardens are not just for desert dwellers. They grow in jungles, rain forests, on mountains, near lakes and seas. Succulents can be found in the semi-arid regions of North and South America, Asia and Africa. Mountain-dwelling succulents thrive despite extreme cold, harsh winds and poor soil.

Sounds kind of like the perfect plant. Consider growing a succulent next time you feel you want to give up gardening in a tough-to-please spot.
