Faux fossils make this patio floor far more intriguing than just leaving it in its plain-concrete form.

A colored-concrete patio floor can be made more interesting when a texture or design is added to the surface. Here, faux "fossils" are made using leaf imprints in different shapes and sizes, in a freeform, random pattern. Other ideas for adding surface interest to plain concrete:
  • Embedded tile or flat glass
  • Swirls and scores
  • Rocks and aggregate
  • Shells
  • Children's handprints and footprints / pets' pawprints
  • Heavily brushed
  • Hosed-off to expose aggregate
  • Seeded with rock salt for a pitted effect

Keep in mind that any of these embellishments or textures would occur while pouring a new or fresh batch of concrete for a patio or paver -- you can't add these effects to existing concrete. Just a reminder.
