The owner of a tiny backyard in the foothills near Pasadena, California, makes wise use of the property's limited space. Because California has been in a drought for a few years, there have been many campaigns for homeowners to "lose their lawns" in favor of more water-wise alternatives.
Pavers from one of the big-box hardware stores have been embedded in decomposed granite (DG) to define and designate a portion of the yard as a patio, with a bistro set and an umbrella. A patio like this is fairly easy to construct, especially since no concrete mixing or pouring is involved.
