Gunite construction made possible all sorts of swimming pool shapes: biomorphs, kidney shapes, clover-like. In the 1950s, some of the higher-end private swimming pools took on more literal shapes, like starfish, boomerangs, guitars (Elvis), pianos (Liberace) and recognizable state shapes. The most popular of the latter was and still is a pool in the shape of the state of Texas.
