Definition: A source of warmth and gatherings, and outdoor fireplace contains elements such as a center firebox, chimney, screen and back wall. Most building codes state that outdoor chimneys must rise 2 feet above any structure within 10 feet of it, making chimney height more important when the fireplace is close to the house. Freestanding fireplaces are separate structures that may require a building permit. Materials include prefabricated metal, terracotta, brick, stucco and stacked stone.
