Dark succulent rosettes on long stalks look otherworldly.

This raised bed of drought-tolerant succulents proves that not all water-wise plants are spiny cacti or tumbleweeds. These "black" succulents are Aeonium arboreum 'Schwarzkopf,' and are also known as Black Tree Aeonium.

Schwarzkopf are rosette-shaped succulents that grow on long "stalks," but they can be easily propagated. Take stem and leaf cuttings and let the end cut dry or callous, then make a hole in soil and stick in the stem. For leaf cuttings, place on evenly moist soil, ideally a cactus mix. Place in filtered sunlight until little rosettes start to pop out from the leaf or stem cuttings. Gradually introduce into an area with more sunlight when they start to take hold and grow.

Aeoniums are natives of the islands off the north coast of Africa and grow well in arid climates, including the Southwestern United States.
